German Army Trainer

Originally known as the Bundeswehr Sportschuhe, or Federal Defence Sports Shoe, the German Army Trainer, commonly known as the GAT, has become one of the most influential military footwear designs ever produced.

Developed in the 1970s for the German Army, the GAT was built to withstand the demands of military training. While it's still debated which brand produced the original pairs, most believe Adidas secured the contract. Featuring a white leather upper, grey suede overlays and a gum rubber sole, its simple, functional design has remained largely unchanged for decades.

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, surplus pairs found their way into civilian hands through army surplus stores, earning a reputation for their quality, comfort and timeless design.
